“From a crowded field, City of Perth Western Residents Association has endorsed one Lord Mayoral contender and four for Council…”

“For the Lord Mayoral spot they’ve endorsed Spacecubed founder Brodie McCulloch.”

A few days ago, The Perth Voice newspaper broke the story that the City of Perth Western Residents Association of the (CoPWRA) had chosen me as their preferred candidate for Perth Lord Mayor.

Soon after announcing my candidacy, various residents and resident groups reached out to me to arrange a meeting.

One of those groups was the CoPWRA. I meet with the Committee, including their President Anna Vanderbom and Secretary Jane Boxall.

In listening to them, I gained an understanding of what their issues were, which include:

  • Prioritise leafy green residential areas: Perth CBD population will grow. However, this does not require urban infill in our leafy green residential areas of Hollywood and Crawley
  • Sensible parking rules: Parking rules which are required in the CBD need to be thought through before they are applied unilaterally in suburban residential areas
  • Protect Kings Park and Matilda Bay
  • Work collaboratively with all stakeholders: Foster community engagement with local stakeholders including QEII, UWA, Kings Park, and residents in a collaborative, consultative manner
  • Ensure access to appropriate community amenities: Listen to residents and understand what local amenities would be most valued
  • Promote small business: Support and promote small business to provide services and products needed by the local community

They also shared with me the qualities they are looking for in their elected local government leaders:

  • relevant experience, and a deep understanding of the role of Mayor;
  • a track record of leading organisations and the governance around that;
  • having the time available, committing to the role full on;
  • being responsive to local concerns, using a consultative neighbourhood approach;
  • high quality communication skills, with all stakeholders, and
  • independence, being free from conflicts of interest.

It was great to hear the news that they would be officially endorsing me as their preferred candidate for Lord Mayor.

Once they endorsed me, they put up my posters and held an event where residents from Nedlands and Hollywood – Crawley had the opportunity to meet me.

Ms Vanderbom told the Perth Voice, “he is the only person … with real leadership experience, and … a track record of building a team.”

The CoPWRA made it clear that they only chose independent people, who weren’t part of a faction or voting bloc, as this had led to “a lot of trouble under the old regime” and they wanted their mayor and preferred councillors to be “free from conflicts of interest.
