Alaska trip done

I have not put much up here of late, mainly because I have been planning my next big adventure. But before I let you know about that I need to tell you and show you the amazing time I had in Alaska for two weeks on the NCL 2008 familiarisation trip. We went to Seattle, Juneau, Skagway, Hains, Ketchikan and Victoria. It was an intense 2 weeks of tours, food, drink and party. Below is some of the photos of the places and people that made this trip so great, everyone was amazing and really got along well.

party time in Key West

It was the first time I have been to Key West, I had heard of it before but had never paid attention to it. It turns out Key West is a really really cool place, It is a Island off the coast of the US and is joined by a bridge that is the only way to get there besides boat. I think the thing that sums up why Key West is such a cool place is the story of their mayer water skiing the 90 miles across to Cuba, how cool is that! apparently he was drunk and then was stopped by Cuban gun boats.

Tram in Key West After we dispatched tours I went on a city tour, I would have kicked my self if I just went to the beach or something like that so I decided to do the Key West city tour. It was a narrated tour in a open air tram sort of thing. The guide was very informative and had a lot of info about the sites and Key West in general. On the tour we got to go past the Hemmingways family home where he spent a lot of his time writing, from the sounds of things he also spent a lot of time drinking. I had a beer in the bar he used to drink in called sloppy joes, It has now been turned into a tourist hotspot but what can you do.

Hemmingways Wall / House Also there is a red wall (above) around the Hemmingway home which we were told was made out of street (road) bricks from around Key West, apparently Hemmingway and his drinking friends would get drunk and then go and dig up the street around his house and build more of the wall until it was complete.

I also got to see the most southern point of the USA, there is just a marker there, what is more interesting is that it is only 90 miles to Cuba from there.

most southern point of the USA

After the tour I walked around the city a bit, there were many shops and bars in the main strip. It is a very rich community and has a strong arts background, the bars are a very.....vibrant scene.

Media_httpfarm3static_maogn
some gates to something So after looking around myself and some others retired to Kelly's Irish Bar, where we had a few drinks. They had a musician on who was one of the funniest acts i have ever seen. He would rip people as they walked past, some of the people sitting at the table next to us were saying that he was the main reason they come back to Key West for holidays. Did I mention I was there on a Saturday......All the Bars in town were full by 3pm, it was great. I definitely plan on going back to Key West at some point in the future for a holiday and a bit longer that 7 hours. You can see all the photos here, or on flickr.

bus, boat and train in puerto limon

It was exciting to go to a new port, Puerto Limon is in Costa Rica and just above the panama canal. You can drive across the whole country in 3.5 hours which I thought was cool. After dispatching tours in some more extreme heat Jeff and I jumped on one of the tours that we were running (I dont think there was much else to do there anyway).

Media_httpfarm3static_eytid

bananas

The first stop was a Banana plantation, they export to Europe and North America, it is a big brand called dole, I havent heard of them before but Jeff says they are big.

Media_httpfarm3static_geieg

more trains!!!

After the plantation we got onto a train and went up the caribbean coast. There was once a train line across the whole of Costa Rica but there was a big earth quake and allot of the infrastructure was distroyed including the train system. There are also many abandoned buildings and the pier looks like it has seen better days.

the local beer

Media_httpfarm3static_yjvef

the canal of blah blah ( I forgot the name, it starts with a "T" )

Anyway part of the train tracks had been restored and we went on them. Once off the train we boarded boats and went through the canals. There was lots of wildlife and stuff, all in all a good tour......lots of old folk though. :)

The first time I have been in san fran with good weather

Yes it was amazing, I have been to San Francisco a few times and the weather has always been shit. Today was amazing. After dispatching the tours in the morning I had to stay within phone range of the ship, so I went and sat in a nice park with Lydia, it is the first time in over 2 months I have actually sat in one place for more than 1 hour so it was nice.
Media_httpfarm1static_rstht
Once I finished my all morning duty I went to fisherman wharf and saw the sea lions and alcatraz and the golden gate bridge, they all looked the same as last time but better because they were in the sun.

Media_httpfarm1static_czhth

After that I caught a taxi into federation square and met Tracy and Herman, we then walked back to the ship. San fran is defiantly on my list of “places I want to live in my life at some point” it has a really good vibe and serenity. After walking back to the ship we left for Victoria in Canada which is meant to be nice.

The view from the medical centre in LA

Well I am still in the medical centre in LA, it is amazing to see every liquid in you body try and escape at the same time. Also a have lost a few KG’s which is good in preparation for Alaska because I will be eating a lot of Alaskan salmon apparently.
Media_httpfarm1static_oebsm
This is the view from my room in the medical centre; I think we are at a freight port or something. LA is a hole anyway so I don’t really care that I am missing it.
