One thing I know for the next time I go to Scotland is that I need to take more warm clothing. I took almost no clothes as I thought the weather would be the same as Bristol…..I was very, very wrong. The annoying thing is that I do have lots of cold weather clothes which I had for Alaska, but I left them in Bristol. Live and learn.

we don’t look cold do we…..

Other than the cold Scotland was really nice, we flew in using the trusty easyjet, the flight was only an hour which was nice.  By the time we landed and took the bus to our hotel it was pitch black so we went and watched the movie Elizabeth which was a good choice as we would be seeing a lot of history from that era the next day.We decided to get a early night so we could get up early and start seeing the not so sunny Scotland.

But when we woke up it was a sunny day! although still cold. The first thing we did was get on the tour bus that is hop-on-hop-off, if you haven’t noticed we love these busses. It took us all over the city so we could decide what we wanted to get off and see. Our first stop was the Edinburgh Castle that looks over the whole of Edinburgh and is still the headquarters for the Scottish military.

We took a guided tour of the castle and learnt about its history, the wars it has been in and how it is still used by the military. We got to go down into the old part of the castle which has the new part built around it.

this prison cell in the castle is bigger than my room on the ship…. :(

We were lucky enough is to be walking past when they were about to fire the One O’clock Gun which is a L118 howitzer (I trained on L119’s in Victoria). It fires at One O’clock every day, hence the name and was good to see.

that looks familiar…..

We then walked down to the national museum and looked at the History of Scotland exhibition which was good to see because it shows the whole history of Scotland.

It was still cold outside so we decided to sit in a pub for a while to eat and drink while we waited for the Bus to the airport. We could probably have done with one other day in Scotland to go out and see the Highlands but maybe I will come back in summer some time.

i know that name

All the photos from Scotland can be seen here and all of my photo’s for all time are on flickr.
